Privacy Policy
Steno Keyboard collects nothing. Nothing you type ever leaves your device.
The short version. There is no account, no analytics, no tracking, no advertising, and no server that belongs to us. Everything the keyboard does happens on your device. The only time the app uses the network at all is when you personally tap to download a dictionary.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not collect, store, transmit, sell, or share any personal information.
Specifically, we do not collect what you type, the apps you type in, your contacts, your location, your device identifiers, usage or analytics data, or crash reports.
What you type
Steno Keyboard translates your keystrokes into text on your device, using dictionaries stored on your device. Your keystrokes and the text produced from them are never sent anywhere, never logged, and never stored beyond what is needed to type the current sentence.
Your dictionaries
Dictionaries you import or download are stored only on your device, in the app's own storage. They are not uploaded, backed up to us, or shared. Entries you add are equally private.
Downloading dictionaries
The app can fetch a starter dictionary for you, but only when you ask it to. When you do, your device requests a file directly from that dictionary's original host, such as GitHub. We are not involved in that request and receive nothing from it.
As with any web request, the host you download from can see your device's IP address and will have its own privacy policy governing what it does with that. If you would rather not make such a request at all, you can import a dictionary file from your device instead and the app will never touch the network.
Full Access
iOS asks whether to grant a custom keyboard "Full Access". Steno Keyboard requests it for one reason: without it, iOS does not allow a keyboard to copy anything to the clipboard, and the keyboard's Lookup page has a button that copies a steno outline. That is all it is used for.
Typing and translation work without Full Access. If you leave it off, the keyboard still works fully as a keyboard, and only copying an outline from Lookup is unavailable. Whether it is on or off, nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.
Purchases
Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. Apple tells the app only whether a purchase exists so it can unlock the corresponding features.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects no information from anyone, children included.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date below. Since the app collects nothing, we do not anticipate meaningful changes.
